The Rev. Dr. Dean Nadasdy, author of a number of gospel dramas, is the next speaker in the Walter Wangerin Jr. Excellence in Preaching Series for 2013-14. He will preach at the Chapel of the Resurrection on Feb. 2, 2014. All Sunday morning services in the preaching series begin at 10 a.m. at the Chapel.
In 2012, Dean Nadasdy began a three-year term as President of the Minnesota South District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod after serving as Senior Pastor of Woodbury Lutheran Church, Woodbury, MN, since 2000. Before coming to Woodbury, he had served Grace Church, Eugene, OR (1973-1981) and Cross View Church, Edina, MN (1981-1997).
From 1997 to 2000, he served as Associate Professor of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, where he was the first to hold the Gregg H. Benidt Memorial Chair in Homiletics and Literature. He currently teaches as an adjunct instructor in the D. Min. program at Concordia Seminary. He has lectured in homiletics at seminaries in Latvia and Hungary. He is a frequent presenter in homiletics, worship, and mission at conferences of pastors and Christian educators.
In 2004 he was elected 3rd Vice President of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (2004-2007) and reelected in 2007 as 4th Vice President (2007-2010).
He wrote a class for children preparing for Communion, This Is the Feast (CPH, 2001). He has written several adult Bible studies for publication. He has co-edited a book on homiletics, titled Preaching is Worship (CPH, 2011), which contains essays by University Pastor James Wetzstein and Jochum Chair John Nunes. He was a contributor to the study notes for the Lutheran Study Bible (ESV/CPH) released in 2009. From 2006-2010 he was founding editor of Faithful and Afire, a series of monthly Bible studies for pastors used by over half of LCMS pastoral circuits.
Dr. Nadasdy has contributed to several Christian drama collections. Two collections of his worship dramas have been published, Gospel Dramas (Augsburg/Fortress) and Cross Views: Story Dramas That Teach the Faith (CPH). His children’s Christmas plays are used in churches around the country. He also authored Tough Days and Talks with God (Augsburg/Fortress) and Questions Teens Are Asking Today (CPH). He is also a writer for Creative Communications for the Parish.
Dr. Nadasdy received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from Concordia University, Ann Arbor, MI, in 1993. In 1996, Concordia University, Seward, NE, awarded him its Doctor of Letters degree for his writing. He enjoys writing poetry and hymn lyrics, loves art history, and films. He and Susie have been married for 44 years. She is a retired Lutheran middle and high school teacher. They are blessed with three children, Kristin, Molly, and Philip, all of whom are graduates of Valparaiso University; and four grandchildren, Luke, Greta, Micah, and Emily.
The Wangerin preaching series, which originated in 2012, is intended to bring notable preachers to the Chapel of the Resurrection. The 2013-14 series began Oct. 20 with guest preacher the Rev. James Honig, Senior Pastor of Faith Ev. Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Glen Ellyn, IL, and published novelist. On Nov. 17th, the second speaker in the series was the Rev. Dr. Leopoldo Sánchez, the Werner R.H. Krause and Elizabeth Ringger Krause Endowed Chair for Hispanic Ministries at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis.
