Scholarships and Funding for Study Abroad

Inquire with the Office of International Programs for additional ways to fund your study abroad experience.  Remember Valparaiso University Financial Aid and Scholarships apply to affiliated programs abroad, with the exception of some music/athletic performance scholarships, so your payment plan remains the same.


Valparaiso Univeristy Office of International Programs Scholarships:

Wallace L. Pretzer Study Abroad Scholarship - $1,250

Valpo Study Abroad Study Center Photography Scholarship (NEW!) - $500

Two awards of $500 each will be given to creative students with a passion for photography who are spending a semester abroad through Valparaiso University. Recipients of this scholarship are expected to submit images and film footage to the Office of International Programs upon their return so the OIP may use for promotional materials. A committee, comprised of OIP Study Abroad and IMC staff, will select the awardees each semester based on their application, portfolio, and study abroad destination. 

- Participate in an approved for-credit, semester-long Study Abroad program (preference given to VU Study Center participants: Reutlingen, Cambridge, San Jose, Hangzhou)
- Completed Photography Scholarship application
- Submitted creative portfolio of photographs (virtual or hard copy)
- Minimum 2.75 GPA
Deadlines: December 1 for the following spring semester, April 1 for the following fall semester


Valparaiso Univeristy Department of Foreign Language & Literatures Scholarships:

The Henry & June Giebel Scholarship - $5,000

For students attending a year-long program in Germany.

The Rev. & Mrs. Arthur L. Reinke & The Rev. & Mrs. Augustus Reinke Memorial Scholarship

For Classics students who have completed one year of college Latin or Greek.

The John & Dorothea Helms Endowed Scholarship

Annual award; preference to students studying Greek or Latin.

Delta Upsilon Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi Scholarship

For students who have had at least one year of Greek or Latin; preference given to Eta Sigma Phi members.

The Professor Carol Petersen Scholarship

Awarded every year to an incoming student majoring in French or German - must be nominated for this scholarship.

The Patterson McLean Friedrich French Scholarship - $1,000

For junior French majors; students are nominated by French professors.

Valparaiso University Office of Financial Aid:

All students can consult with the Office of Financial Aid to discuss the various costs estimates as well as seek guidance on developing a budget for the term abroad.  A Financial Aid Counselor can help students identify extra sources of funding. Visit for more information.


Valparaiso University Gilman Scholarship Program:

 Benjamin Gilman Scholarship - up to $5,000
The Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that the Fall 2015 and Year 15/16 application is now available online for students to access.  Applications are due October 7, 2014 by 11:59 p.m. (central).  For an application to be complete, students will need to have their application certified online by a study abroad advisor and a financial aid advisor to be considered.  All applicants will be notified of their status in June.  For more information about the Gilman Scholarship, webinar schedules, and other helpful resources please visit the Gilman Scholarship website.  
Valpo Internal Deadline: One month before the student application deadline

Submit your final application to the Office of International Programs to have your essay statements reviewed by a faculty committee.  You will be matched with a faculty member to review your essay statements before the final submission deadline.  Get started now!

DAAD-German Exchange

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers Undergraduate Scholarships to highly qualified undergraduate students.

Fulbright Scholarships
Since 1946, the Department of State Fulbright Program has funded U.S. students and faculty to study and/or conduct research in other countries, in order to foster mutual understanding between nations.

Benjamin Gilman Scholarship
This program offers a competition for awards for study abroad, for US citizen students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding at a 2-year or 4-year college or university.

Boren Scholarship
The U.S. government administers the National Security Education Program (NSEP) scholarships for undergraduates who will specifically pursue the study of languages and cultures currently under-represented in study abroad, especially those critical to U.S. national security. 

Diversity Abroad
Diversity abroad was founded to ensure that all students are aware and have equal access to study and travel abroad opportunities. The mission of Diversity Abroad is to increase minority students’ participation in study and travel abroad programs.

Bridging Scholarship
The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan.
