Rhoda (Schur ’86) Decatur

Rhoda (Schur ’86) Decatur earned her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Valparaiso University. Rhoda is currently a preschool teacher with TLC Christian Preschool, a ministry of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester, Mass. Prior to that, she taught in the Oxford Public Schools for 15 years. Rhoda has been very involved as a volunteer in civic and community activities and is currently an elected Town Meeting Member in Shrewsbury, Mass., a Thrivent Congregational Advocate, and is on the Endowment committee at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Westborough, Mass. Valparaiso University was fortunate to have Rhoda as an active member of the Valparaiso University Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2002 until 2011. During that time, she was secretary for two terms and the first vice president, a position she held for two terms. She is a member of the Guild and is also involved with the Valpo Admission Network. Rhoda has many family members who are graduates of Valpo and one nephew who is a current student. They include her parents, Dr. Walter R. Schur ’35 and Delta Jean (Newman ’43) Schur; seven siblings, Paul Schur ’66 (and his wife, Marilyn Hasz ’65), David Schur ’70 (and his wife, Lynn Erickson ’68), Jonathan Schur ’76, Timothy Schur ’71, Mary (Schur ’78) Giguere, Joel Schur ’79, and Daniel Schur ’81; and four nephews, Adam Schur ’04, Matthew Giguere ’07, Jacob Schur ’11, and Noah Schur ’14. She lives in Shrewsbury, Mass., with her husband, Thomas, and their son, Ethan.
