Carnegie Program Enhances Engineering Education
Valparaiso University’s College of Engineering is believed to be the first engineering college in the United States to offer the Dale Carnegie Course® for academic credit.
Nicole Evers ’08 ME and Calvin Warren ’08 CE are among the engineering students participating in the Dale Carnegie Course®.
“Since I came to Valpo, it has been my dream to start this program,” said Jeff Will, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. “My success as a professor has been in large part because of the ‘softer’ skills—the ability to deal with people, empathize with them, and understand.”
First offered in the fall of 2006, the program is geared toward enhancing the leadership, human relations skills and interpersonal communication skills of engineering students. Juniors and seniors are encouraged to take the class.
“This is really an example that we are dedicated to students and will do everything we can to give them the tools they need to succeed,” Will said.
Dale Carnegie has provided leadership training for nearly 100 years, and counts 400 of the Fortune 500 companies among its clients.
