Engineering Alumnus Provides Internship for Valpo Student

Matt Cavin made an excellent impression last summer during his internship at EMSystem in Milwaukee as part of the Kemper Scholar program.

The impression was so good that the Valparaiso University senior from Roanoke, Va., has a standing job offer once he graduates.

Andy Nunemaker ’91 EE is EMSystem’s chief executive officer and was impressed with Cavin’s work for the company as an international sales representative.

“He scoured through international reports and found sales leads for the company in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the (United Kingdom) and the Middle East,” Nunemaker says. “Like many Valpo students, Matt had already practiced leadership skills on campus and was ready to walk into a major career role.”

The Kemper Scholar program prepares students for leadership and service by combining education in the liberal arts with opportunities for career exploration and practical experiences.

“Being engaged in such a wide variety of projects across all levels of operations has given me insight and experience that is not often availed to an intern,” Cavin says.

Nunemaker, who also has worked for GE, believes it is important to support Valpo through student recruitment. Two Valpo graduates currently work for EMSystem.

“Companies are realizing that Valpo alumni are special,” Nunemaker says. “The values instilled at Valpo last throughout many alumni careers, and Valpo graduates have a higher level of loyalty than many other alumni.”
