Visiting Assistant Professor
Mueller Hall LL05
Professor Johnson began teaching at Valparaiso University in the fall of 2010, as a part-time Core teacher. She is now a Visiting Assistant Professor, and teaches classes for the English Department as well. Her teaching specialties are composition, literature, and creative writing. Professor Johnson has a particular passion for poetry, and she connects this passion with her work at Valparaiso University by not only teaching creative writing, but also serving on the Wordfest committee and as Poetry Editor for The Cresset.
Beyond the campus community Professor Johnson also works as the Poetry Editor for a small press called WordFarm. She has published numerous poems in literary journals such as The Valparaiso Poetry Review, The Louisville Review, The Christian Century, and 32 Poems, and her first collection of poems won the 2011 Powder Horn Prize and will be published this summer by Sage Hill Press.
Professor Johnson holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Spalding University, and an MA in Theological Studies from Wheaton College (Wheaton, IL). She also did her undergraduate work at Wheaton College, majoring in English and Sociology.
In her free time, Professor Johnson loves to read, and particularly enjoys the genre of science fiction, which explains why she’ll be teaching an ENGL 200 class this fall on contemporary science fiction literature. She commutes to Valparaiso from Southwestern Michigan, where she lives with her 2 children, just a few blocks from Lake Michigan.
