Join fellow alumni next spring on a faculty-led tour to Germany that is sure to suit your tastes and interests. Valpo's acclaimed Chorale will tour east-central Germany at roughly the same time, allowing for the two groups to intersect at several of the Chorale's performance venues. The Valpo highlight comes on June 2nd in Leipzig when President Mark Heckler will join the two tour groups and celebrate Valpo's decade-long friendship with the Thomaskirche, where the Chorale will perform on that day.
Members of the alumni tour will hear the Chorale sing a total of four times, first in Leipzig's Thomaskirche and later in Meißen. Tour members will also hear a Mozart opera at Dresden's famed Semperoper and can opt into a performance at Leipzig's Gewandhaus.
Leading the tour are Professors Sarah DeMaris (German) and Richard DeMaris (Theology). They will be on hand to prompt discussion and to provide insights into the many sites on the itinerary; local tour guides conduct the daily excursions. Sarah has lived in Germany and Austria for a total of five years, including a stint as director of Valpo's Study Center in Reutlingen; Richard joined her for those two years in Reutlingen and has spent several additional summers in Germany. They have both traveled extensively in Europe, including six months in Rome when Richard taught at the Pontifical Biblical Institute.
Space on the tour is limited and will be filled on a first-deposited, first-served basis. The process will be as follows:
