5-26-2012 Assistant Professors Alex Capaldi, Mindy Capaldi, and Hugh Gong, of the Mathematics & Computer Science Department joined eight other new faculty members for a week long new faculty seminar to Cambridge, England. The program was directed by George C. Heider, Associate Professor of Theology, and was an introduction to the role of Valparaiso University in the institution of higher education and on the study of vocation.

4-5-2012 Lara Pudwell, assistant professor of mathematics and computer science, recently published her paper "Enumeration schemes for vincular patterns' in the journal, Discrete Mathematics. This paper is joint work with Andrew Baxter of Pennsylvania State University.

2011-2012 Jim Caristi, Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science was on sabbatical for the academic year 2011-2012. He worked on a project with the United States Department of Agriculture that involved assessing the quality of agricultural statistics boards. This project took him to Washington D.C. many times. He also found time to attend a computer science conference in Raleigh, NC, and a Phi Beta Kappa triennial conference in Palm Beach, FL. But  perhaps the high point of the entire year was when he attended a racquetball camp in Austin, TX, run by the number one racquetball player in the world and racquetball player of all time, Kane Waselenchuk.

1-4-2012  Mathematics Facuty Active at Joint Mathematics Meetings
Nine Members of the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science attended the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in Boston, Massachusetts, during the first week of January. JMM is an annual meeting of both the Mathematical Association (MAA) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Over 7,200 mathematicians, mostly from the USA, were in attendace this year.

12-20-12 Lara Pudwell, Assistant Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science, published her paper "Pattern Avoidance in Ternary Trees" in the Journal of Integer Sequences, volume 15 (2012). This paper was joint work with Nathan Gabriel (Rice University, Katherine Peske (Concordia College), and Samuel Tay (Kenyon college), three undergraduate students who worked under Professor Pudwell's supervision in the 2010 Valparaiso Experience in Research by Undergraduate Mathematicians program.

12-17-2011  Alex Capaldi Attends BEER Converence in Portland, Oregon
From December 17-18, 2011, Alex Capaldi, Assistant Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science, attended the 2011 "Biomathematics and Ecology:Education and Research" converence at the University of Oregon. Dr. Capaldi attended a number of talks and discussions on the pedagogy of teaching mathematics relevant to biologists.

10-27-2011 Alex Capaldi Gives Presentation at Franklin College
On October 27, 2011, Alex Capaldi, Assistant Professor of Mathematics & Computer Science, gave an invited presentation on "An Introduction to Mathematical Epidemiology", at the Franklin College Department of Mathematics and Computing Colloquium. The talk presented resulty from a previous REU project that Dr. Capaldi mentored.
