The value of art to a community The opportunity
to truly appreciate art is a gift. The benefits to our community of a museum the caliber of Valparaiso University’s Brauer Museum of Art are substantial. Museum visitors from grade school through college, and adult art lovers as well, profit from the vast number of educational outreach programs offered by the Brauer Museum. These programs are part of the museum’s larger strategy for promoting an appreciation of and an education about the value of art to our community and our world. To this end, the Brauer Museum creates and distributes educational teacher packets and worksheets. It also sponsors docent-guided visits for area schools and annual student competitions. Adults, as well, expand their knowledge of fine art through gallery talks, special events, lectures and symposia with scholars and other noted authorities. These educational experiences frequently relate directly to special exhibitions at the Brauer Museum, often of national and international importance. As is the Brauer Museum’s policy, no fee is charged to the public to view these extraordinary works of art. The museum relies on donations from visitors and annual support of individual donors and corporations to maintain its budget for programming, acquisition and outreach. A substantial art collection The Brauer Museum boasts a collection of more than 2,700 American works of art from the mid-19th century to the present. Included are landscapes by Frederic E. Church, Asher B. Durand, and John F. Kensett; large late-19th century paintings by T. Alexander Harrison and Elizabeth Nourse; Impressionist paintings by Karl Anderson, Childe Hassam and Robert Reid, and urban realist paintings by William Glackens and John Sloan. The museum also holds early modernists paintings by John Marin, Walt Kuhn and Georgia O’Keeffe. Other contemporary works include artists such as Elaine De Kooning, Ed Paschke, Andy Warhol, Chuck Close and Ansel Adams. In addition to this extensive collection, the museum also houses a store with a wide range of interpretive materials. These include original works of art, books, posters, jewelry, glass and pottery. Keep art alive As the only art museum in Northwest Indiana, the Brauer Museum is a valuable asset for the area’s quality of life and cultural vitality.
