View of the Mountain House from North Mountain

Kaaterskill Lakes

Junius R. Sloan (1827-1900), Kaaterskill Lakes, ca.1870, oil on canvas on masonite, 35 x 59 inches, Brauer Museum of Art, Percy H. Sloan Trust, 1953.1.69.

Sloan painted a salon-style landscape in 1870, when the Catskill Mountain House was at the peak of its popularity, with accommodations for 400 guests and as many servants. It was a ritual at the Mountain House to wake the guests shortly before five to invite them out on the piazza to watch the sun rise over the Hudson.
