Chicago art educator Percy H. Sloan noted, "My father, Junius R. Sloan, was one of Chicago's foremost pioneer artists. He left many hundreds of paintings. His widow, my mother, could part with none, and for over two decades those pictures were virtually hidden from the world. She cared for them sacredly."

Percy was his parents' only surviving offspring. He took charge of their legacy by placing his American painting collection - including 276 of his father Junius R. Sloan's paintings - at Valparaiso University. This painting collection began what became the Brauer Museum of Art. Family letters, photographs, and materials documenting his maternal grandfather's Spencerian Writing system were also included in the gift to Valparaiso University . Additional materials were also placed in the Newberry Library in Chicago.
