From his childhood in Ohio through his life as a professional artist in Chicago, Junius R. Sloan was captivated by the delights of drawing and painting and of beauty in nature. He was one of the earliest painters of the Great Lakes region and his art, together with the documents of his life, provide a valuable window into life in nineteenth-century mid-America.
