Valpo Falls at Butler in Horizon League Quarters
Lindsey Fox scored twice as Butler ended Valparaiso’s season on Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 victory in the Horizon League quarterfinals held in Indianapolis, Ind. With the loss, Valpo’s season has come to a close with a 10-9 record, tied for the third most victories in school history. Butler, the fourth seed, broke the scoreless tie with 8:01 remaining before halftime as Fox found the back of the net from 25 yards out in the middle of the field. The Crusaders, the tournament’s fifth seed, trailed just 1-0 at the break, despite being outshot 6-3 over the opening 45 minutes. Fox then added what proved to be the insurance goal 17:42 into the second half, scoring from the right side about 18 yards out with Carrie Twyman drawing the assist. Valpo had a golden scoring opportunity late in the match to get on the scoreboard, but Kendal Brown’s (Lake Zurich, Ill./Carmel Catholic H.S.) shot ricocheted off of the crossbar. “We had a good season and have a lot to be proud of this year,” head coach Stephen Anthony said afterwards. “Unfortunately, we just could not finish on our chances today.” Erin Murray (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley H.S.) finished the match with two saves for the Brown and Gold, and became the school’s all-time leader in minutes played over the course of her career. Annalise Larkin made four stops for Butler (10-8-1) in the victory. The Bulldogs outshot Valpo 12-8 for the match and held a 5-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
