Gregg Schmidt begins his first season as a member of the Crusader coaching staff, working with the jumpers.  Schmidt also serves as the strength and conditioning coach for jumps/sprints/hurdles.

Schmidt arrives at Valpo after having served as the throws coach at St. Lawrence University during the 2005 and 2006 indoor seasons.  Part of the indoor Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year, Schmidt helped guide 12 throwers to top-six finishes at the league championship meet, including conference champions in the men’s weight throw and the men’s shot put.

Prior to coaching at St. Lawrence, Schmidt was the throws coach at Palmyra H.S. in Palmyra, N.J., where he guided several state and N.J. Meet of Champions qualifiers.  He threw collegiately at Lynchburg College, taking home the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in the weight throw in 2002 and registering six other top-six conference finishes.

Schmidt earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Lynchburg in 2004, and received a master’s of education from St. Lawrence in 2007.  He is a USA Weightlifting Certified Sports Performance Coach and has earned his USATF Level I Coaching Certification.  A native of Palmyra, N.J., Schmidt currently resides in Valparaiso.
