The Bach Institute at Valparaiso University
Christopher M. Cock, Director

The Bach Institute at Valparaiso University was established to ensure the legacy of the music and theological perspective of Johann Sebastian Bach for future generations. The Institute explores the life and music of Johann Sebastian Bach from its proper historic, musical and theological context through faithful and artistic performances, seminars and other academic activities. These activities provide for the enrichment of Valparaiso University, its students, its community and the broader musical and religious communities in the United States and around the world.

The Bach Institute at Valparaiso University achieves its mission through performance, scholarly research and dialogue, and collection and preservation. Performances of Bach’s choral, organ, orchestral and chamber works will be given by Valparaiso University students and faculty, as well as national and international guest artists.

The Bach Institute at Valparaiso University is funded through an endowment established by a generous gift from Phyllis (Buehner ’54) and Richard (’51, ’53 J.D.) Duesenberg.

Phyllis and Richard Duesenberg encourage the educational vision of the Institute. "Since our student days at Valpo, we have dreamed of VU as an American center for the study of Bach’s music," Richard Duesenberg says. “This Institute satisfies one of our long held ambitions for the University.”
