Valpo Biology Club Stream Restorations

"Putting Biology Into Service"

Our most recent stream restoration was during the Fall semester, 2005 on one of our local streams and it was a great success!  Below you will see the kinds of activities we are involved with when we "put biology into service!"

Check here later for the dates and time of our next stream restoration in the Spring semester, 2006!

Valpo Biology Club members Mike, Brian, Shannon and Katrina cooperate with the Saint Joseph River Valley Fly Fishers, the Elkhart Conservation Club and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to rehabilitate a portion of the Dowagiac Creek. Our club has donated thousands of dollars worth of labor to such worthy (Michigan DNR approved) conservation projects.

Bank erosion has made this area of the stream into a shallow, slow flowing, high-temperature killing zone for trout. Recycled Christmas trees will stabilize the bank by trapping silt. The channel will narrow and deepen, generating a swifter flow. That will keep the water cooler this summer.

Move it where? Do you realize how much that thing weighs?

After the job, you need to cool off. Katrina, Mike and Shannon enjoy the 50 degree water.

The post-project picnic is assembled by Joe Mitchell (www.rivertenders.com), who has decades of experience in stream rehabilitation.

Brian, Mike, Shannon and Katrina relax at the cabin while the bratwursts are frying.
