This style guide is designed to give consistent solutions to common problems
writers face in producing written materials for Valparaiso University and its
colleges. It conforms largely to The Associated
Press Stylebook and Libel Manual, but contains exceptions to both the AP
manual and The Chicago Manual of Style.
Where conflicts exist between this and other guides, this style guide takes preference. Written and compiled by professional communicators from the Office of Integrated Marketing and
Communications, the guide will be updated as needed by IMC.
You will note that some listings pertain to grammar rules, and some address
strictly style issues. The style guide focuses on external and general
audiences. For some departments with specialized audiences, other stylebooks
may be required.
The intent of this guide is to help achieve consistency of style in our
writing University-wide. Although its objective is to resolve conflict and
reduce confusion, the guide may generate questions. If this is the case, please
send an e-mail to IMC@valpo.edu, and the IMC staff will work on a solution to
your problem.
