Tom Cath, Director          

Tom has been the Director of the Career Center at Valparaiso University since June 2009. He previously led the Career Center at DePauw University for twenty-six years. At DePauw he also served as the Men’s Tennis Coach for twenty-four years, during which he was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 2005     and 1995. He spent the first five years of his career in Chicago as a commercial banking officer with Continental Illinois National Bank and Standard Chartered     Bank. Tom graduated from DePauw in 1976 with a BA in Economics. He graduated in 1978 with an M.I.M. from The Thunderbird Graduate School of International   Management in Glendale, Arizona. Cath and his wife, Allison, live in Valparaiso and have three sons.

Holly Simpson, LMHC, Assistant Director

Holly is a transplant from the South (Oklahoma and Georgia). Holly graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Psychology degree and trained at Georgia   State University where she earned her Masters of Science in Community Counseling and concurrently graduated from Psychological Studies Institute, now known   as Richmont Graduate University, with a diploma in Christian Counseling.  Holly is Licensed as a Professional Counselor in Oklahoma and Georgia and is    Licensed as a Mental Health Counselor in Indiana.  Prior to moving to Indiana, Holly worked as a counselor in private practice,  in a nursing home with  the elderly, in a county run Community Counseling Center with youth and families, and also in the state hospital for youth and adolescents. 

 Moving to Indiana gave Holly an opportunity to pursue a interest in working with college students in career development. "This has been a rewarding career move for me and I have met and worked with amazing colleagues and gifted students."  Holly has been with the Career Center since July of 2005 and has served as the Career Counselor and now serves as the Assistant Director.  Holly is passionate about helping students develop holistically and learn about their strengths, gifts, skills and passions that will ultimately point them toward a rewarding career. Additionally, Holly enjoys serving in her church's children's ministry and has volunteered at the Porter County Mental Health Association and serves on the steering committee for the Lakeshore Professional Women's Conference.

Matt Wells, Career Development Advisor

Matt Wells currently serves as the Career Development Advisor in the Career Center, where he provides 1:1 career counseling to undergraduate and graduate students, and coordinates and presents a variety of workshops, programs, and events.  He serves on the Executive Board of Directors for CDPI (Career   Development Professionals of Indiana) as the Public Relations Chair. Random tidbit: Matt used to be an opera singer, having completed his Bachelor’s and  Master’s degrees at Indiana University, and still maintains a semi-regular performance schedule "after-hours" with various Chicago-area ensembles.  He and his  wife live in Valparaiso with their son & two dogs.

Lisa Grubb, Administrative Assistant

Lisa completed two years of college studying graphic design at Ball State University.  Prior to working for the Valpo Career Center, Lisa worked at Tech Credit    Union as a Customer Service Representative. During a 13 year hiatus from Tech, she was a stay at home mom, keeping busy with babysitting, helping out at  school and church, but most importantly, leading a Girl Scout troop of 20+ girls. Lisa’s hobbies include reading, exploring home décor, travel, visiting museums  and hearing what Valpo students have to say.
