Students and Career Development

Career Development and Your Students

Throughout students' experiences at Valpo, they undergo tremendous emotional, spiritual, and cognitive development.  A crucial- yet sometimes overlooked - component of holistic student development and wellbeing is career development.  Our students are inundated with strong messages from parents, media, etc. that often portray an incorrect (or at best, incomplete) picture of the career development process.

Career development is a lifelong process of self-exploration and awareness, continual acquisition of knowledge about the ever-changing world of work, and decision-making.  Most students will undergo several career changes throughout their lives, and therefore it is essential that they are empowered and equipped with the understanding of how to make career decisions...not just help them "plug in" to a specific job/field where they'll stay for life (*this scenario is extremely uncommon nowadays).  We would like to partner with you to aid your students in their vocational discernment and development of practical job search skills which they can use for a lifetime.

Promote Us To Your Students

Though we spend a great deal of energy on publicizing our services and programs, it can be very powerful for a faculty member to individually refer students to the Career Center.  Your positive influence on students' development is critical as students begin to explore themselves, what motivates them, and how/where they'd like to use their strengths and gifts after Valpo.  We encourage you to refer students to use our services as you see a need; our most commonly-used programs are listed below.

  • 1:1 Career Counseling
