Career Center Events & Programs

The Valpo Career Center hosts a large number of programs and events each semester, ranging from small workshops, to prominent guest speakers, and large Career Fairs.  If your department or student organization would like to collaborate with us to develop a new program, please don't hesitate to contact us - career.center@valpo.edu.  Below you'll find a list of our ongoing event series, and to the left are links to our upcoming events calendar, and descriptions of our major annual events.

  • Career Fair
    • We host two annual career fairs, one in the Fall, and one in the Spring.  These events typically bring in 80-100 employers from a variety of industries, who are looking to hire Valpo students for job and internship opportunities, as well as network and share advice and information on their respective fields.  Make sure to check out the Career Fairs page for information on our upcoming fairs, along with tips on how to best prepare.
  • Speed Networking
    • This fun and fast-paced event employs a concept similar to speed dating, and you'll rotate through 5-minute meetings with a list of professionals to practice your networking skills.  This event has been wildly successful, and many students have gotten job and internship offers out of it; see here for more details.
  • Networking Nights: Careers in ...
    • This ongoing series of events is designed to give students "insider info" into various career fields and industries, and allow them to add meaningful professional connections to their network.  Each event consists of a panel of professionals from a particular industry, starting with an open Q&A discussion, and followed by a light reception with a chance to meet and mingle with the panelists. Below are some examples of panels we have hosted in the past year:
      • Careers in Sports
      • Non-Profit Careers
      • Careers in Communications
      • Creative Careers
      • "Green" Careers
      • Alternate Careers ("Gap year" programs, such as the Peace Corps, Teach for America, etc.)
      • Careers for English Majors
  • Etiquette Dinner
    • Every other year, we host the Valpo Etiquette Dinner, with Patricia Cook - a leading expert on business etiquette and professionalism - as our guest presenter.  Don't miss out when this program is offered!
  • Career Workshops
    • Our staff also coordinates an ongoing series of workshops devoted to various career topics.  Frequently, we will bring in employers to present the workshops listed below:
      • Interview Preparation
      • Getting into Grad School
      • Resume Writing
      • Social Media and Your Job Search
      • Job Search Strategies & Networking
The Career Center also offers outreach programming to different classes, departments, and residence halls.  If your organization or department would like to create an outreach program, please contact Matt Wells for more information.  We ask that outreach requests be made no later than four weeks prior to the desired date of the program.
