Richard Kauzlarich was appointed National Intelligence Officer for Europe at the National Intelligence Council in September of 2003. He is the former director of Special Initiative on the Muslim World for the U.S. Institute of Peace. He earned a master’s degree in applied economics from the University of Michigan in 1976 and a master’s degree in political and administrative development from Indiana University in 1967. From 1999 to 2001, he served as senior adviser to the undersecretary of state for economic, business and agriculture affairs. Kauzlarich was ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1997 to 1999, and was ambassador to the Republic of Azerbaijan from 1994 to 1997.
