Harold J. Moellering ’65

Harold Moellering Professor of Geography

Harold Moellering is Professor Emeritus of geography at Ohio State University, specializing in analytical cartography and geographic information science. He is past chairman of the ACSM Committee on Automation in Cartography and Surveying, and has served as a member of the Committee on Cartography of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council. He has served as a member of the editorial boards of the Cartography and Geographic Information Systems and the International Journal of Geographic Information Systems. He was chair of the ICA Commission on Spatial Data Standards from 1989 to 2007. During that time the Commission analyzed, developed, and organized the material for three major books. The most recent is “World Spatial Metadata Standards” published by Elsevier in 2005. In 2003 he was made an honorary fellow of the International Cartographic Association for his work with the ICA Standards Commission.  He holds two patents on spatial visualization processes. Moellering received his M.A. degree from Wayne State University in 1968 and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan in 1973.
