What Is Distinctive About Valpo's
Program?
Valpo’s Computer Science program does not just train future
programmers. It emphasizes the methodology employed by mathematicians,
engineers and scientists. Exposure to the full breadth of the discipline
gives you every opportunity to seek employment in industry, to advance
rapidly in your profession, and to continue graduate
study.
Research: You'll have the opportunity to join faculty in
research projects both on and off campus. One such
research project involved students and faculty
at Valpo assisting in the process of designing an instrument for NASA
that will reduce the number of amplifiers needed while retaining information
from the x-ray portion of the
spectrum.
Technology:
In addition to the research and co-op
opportunities available, Valpo utilizes up-to-date technology. As well
as utilizing Valpo’s networked system of microcomputers, you'll regularly
use an advanced networked microcomputer laboratory created especially
for you.

An
undergraduate major in Computer Science qualifies
you for immediate entry into the job market.
One hundred percent of Valpo Computer Science
graduates find employment or enter graduate
school within six months of graduation.
Kinds of Work Available
to Graduates in this Major:
Systems
programming, applications programming, data
management and many other technical positions
are available to Computer Science graduates.
Students are also well prepared to move up later
into management positions.
Potential
Hiring Institutions:
Valpo Computer Science graduates hold
positions at companies such as Arthur Andersen, Hewlett-Packard, IBM,
General Dynamics, TRW, Motorola and numerous small companies as well as
at federal, state, and local government agencies.

Extracurricular Groups:
Among
the more than 100 clubs and organizations at
Valpo are chapters of the Association for Computing
Machinery and the Institute for Electrical and
Electronic Engineers.

Off-Campus Opportunities
Cooperative Education and Internships:
Pre-professional experiences are encouraged through cooperative education
internship placements at companies such as Arthur Andersen, Texas Instruments, TDS Corporation,
IBM, and Unisys.
Study Abroad:
Take part in one of Valpo’s 14 international studies
programs in countries such as Mexico, England, Spain, France, Greece, Germany, Namibia, China,
or Japan. Students may also take advantage of semester-long programs in New York, Washington, D.C.,
and Chicago.
