National Council

The CBA's National Council is composed of women and men who are exceptional leaders in their fields. They provide the Dean with expertise, advice, and useful critique about the college's programs, mission, and direction. The National Council meets twice yearly and CBA students often have an opportunity to meet these important decision makers.

Gary Beu joined West Monroe Partners, a full-service provider of business and technology solutions in 2009. From 2005-2009 he was the chief human resources officer at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP, following a 32 year career with Arthur Andersen where he held various local, national and global human resource leadership positions. He earned his B.S.B.A. with a major in accounting from Valparaiso University in 1973. Beu serves on the board for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF,

Midwest Chapter, where he has been an active member since 1992, as well as the board of Scholarship Chicago, where he serves on the Human Resources Planning Committee. His wife, Carol (Menning), is a 1972 graduate of Valpo.

Katherine W. Dean

Katherine Dean is the Managing Director of the Wealth Planning Group for Wells Fargo Private Bank. The Wealth Planning Group provides consulting services to high net worth individuals and businesses through a national network of over 160 estate and tax planning professionals. In this role, Dean is responsible for setting national strategy, influencing cultural change across the Bank, and overseeing management and development of the team. Previously, Dean served as vice president for Merrill Lynch’s Family Office and Private Planning groups and as a Tax Manager for an exclusive Menlo Park CPA firm. Dean is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and received her Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) designation through the Wharton School of Business. Dean holds a B.S. degree in business administration in finance from Valparaiso University and a Master’s degree in Taxation from Golden Gate University. Dean sits on her local school’s advisory board and is active in volunteering in her community. She resides in Walnut Creek, CA with her husband, Tim, and their 2 children, Grace and Colin.


James R. Eckstaedt ’76

A senior corporate executive who has been the CFO of three public companies, a board member of a number of domestic and international corporations. Jim founded Eckstaedt and Associates to provide Interim CFO services along with M&A assistance.

Previously, Jim was the CFO of SM&A and one of the team members who took SM&A private in 2008 in a private equity transaction.

Prior to joining SM&A he was the CFO of Sage Software North America and was a member of the management team that grew Sage from $60 million to $1 billion in annual revenue while the employee headcount grew from 320 to 5,000.  He played a key role in the growth of Sage, since during his tenure as CFO he led and managed the acquisition of 25 businesses at a total value of over $2.0 billion. Prior to Sage, Jim held various executive financial management positions with Western Digital Corporation, a Fortune 500 company. With Western Digital, Jim held the positions of VP and Treasurer, and VP Finance for the semiconductor division.

Jim started his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers.  He is a member of the California Society of CPAs, the Forum for Corporate Directors, a board member and treasurer of a non-profit foundation, board member of Ancala Equity Partners. Jim graduated from Valparaiso University with a B.S. degree in Accounting.

Gary M. Gilbert is an attorney who earned both his undergraduate degree in economics and finance (1960) and his J.D. degree (1962) from Valparaiso University. He has served as an officer in the Pennsylvania National Guard, and as assistant district attorney for York County. Gilbert is past president of the York County Bar Association and member of the House of Delegates of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, founding board member of the Susan P. Byrnes Health Education Center and founding board member of the National Kidney Foundation – York Chapter. He is chairman of the board of the Stewart Companies.

John M. Hanak, statewide director of Purdue Technology Centers, has held officer-level positions at a Fortune 500 metals manufacturer, a middle-market machine-building company and a startup technology firm. Additionally, Hanak co-founded a technology commercialization and consulting firm – North Riverside Partners; and a small investment partnership – CN Associates. Prior to arriving at the Purdue Technology Center of Northwest Indiana in 2005 and co-founding North Riverside Partners in 2003, Hanak served as president, CEO and board member of Digital Innovations, a Chicago-based technology product development and marketing firm. Before joining Digital Innovations, Hanak was a vice president at Ispat Inland Steel, a $2.3B subsidiary of Ispat International NV, with responsibility for all administration and legal matters. Hanak graduated from Valparaiso University with a Bachelor of Science degree, and graduated with distinction from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago with a J.D. degree. He serves on a number of corporate and volunteer boards, including Shure Inc., Time Pilot Corp. and The Challenger Center of Northwest Indiana.

Jeffrey R. Harder, an attorney with Winstead PC, assists startup companies and entrepreneurs in growing their businesses. He has more than 30 years of legal experience working in a wide variety of interest areas. He joined Winstead in 2004 to manage the firm’s biotechnology industry group. The group consists of more than 20 professionals whose practices involve representing institutions, emerging iotechnology and other life science companies, venture capital firms and pharmaceutical and medical device corporations. He was a Christ College scholar at Valpo where he received his B.A. degree in 1974. He received his J.D. degree from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1978. Harder is active in church and civic activities and serves on numerous boards and councils. He is a frequent speaker on a variety of topics.

Walter F. Hoeppner is the vice president and chief human resources officer at HR Green, Inc. He has also served as director, human resources – center of expertise at TAP Pharmaceutical Products. Prior to joining TAP Pharmaceutical Products, he held senior human resources management positions with BP Amoco Corp., ACCO Brands Corp., Federal Signal Corp., and Zebra Technologies Corp. He received his B.S. degree in business administration from Valparaiso University in 1977, and his M.B.A. degree from DePaul University in 1979. He has been involved in civic activities including the Boy Scouts of America. He also is active in the Society for Human Resource Management, and Human Resources Management Association of Chicago.

Mark S. Krueger received his B.S. degree in business administration from Valparaiso University in 1978. He is a CPA and partner at Wipfli LLP, one of the largest accounting firms in the United States. The majority of Wipfli’s clients are middle-market companies, with a particular focus on specific industries, including construction and real estate, financial institutions, health care, nonprofit, and manufacturing and distribution. Krueger is active in the American Institute of CPAs and the Society of Financial Service Professionals. He is past president of the Milwaukee Estate Counselors Forum and past chair of the state Public Policy Committee of the Wisconsin Institute of CPAs. Krueger also is involved in various civic and church activities.


Stewart G. McMillan

Stewart McMillan stepped on as President and CEO of Task Force Tips in 1982. Since then he has helped build the Valparaiso, Ind. company into one of the world’s leading manufacturers of firefighting equipment. The Purdue University graduate’s engineering design work has earned a number of U.S. patents. McMillan’s recent honors include induction into the NW Indiana Business and Industry Hall of Fame and being named as Ivy Technical Institute’s Benefactor of the Year. The Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce also bestowed its Distinguished Community Leader award on him in 2008. His many professional affiliations include membership in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, work on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Manufacturers, work with the Fire & Emergency Management Alliance, as well as the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association, and a lifelong membership in the World President’s Organization. Stewart shares his Valparaiso, Indiana home with his wife, Kathryn, and two children, Kelly and Ian.

Thomas S. Orr ’70

Thomas S. Orr is an attorney with 37 years experience in the fields of reinsurance and property/casualty claims management. After 29 years of service, he retired from General Reinsurance Corporation in August 2010 and now serves as an independent consultant providing arbitration and other services to the insurance/reinsurance industry. Orr earned a B.A. from Valparaiso University and a J.D. with high honors from IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law where he was on Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. He is admitted to the practice of law in the state courts of Illinois and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. During his career, Orr held various leadership positions in reinsurance industry organizations including the Reinsurance Association of America, The Task Force for the Resolution of Insurance and Reinsurance Disputes, and the AIDA Reinsurance and Insurance Arbitration Society (U.S.). Orr is active in the community and has served as Chairman Town of Trumbull, CT Pension Board and on the Village of North Aurora Plan Commission. 


David Phelps

A 1973 graduate of Indiana University, Mr. Phelps is the Senior Managing Director of Brincko Group, LLC, and has over thirty years of executive, financial, and operational leadership experience.  In addition to his term as a former board member of Trans Com USA, Mr. Phelps is also a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, Turnaround Management Association and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.  A speaker at the ABI Winter Leadership conference and co-author of “Bankruptcy & Corporate Restructuring: Closely held company issues”, Mr. Phelps serves as a leader in his field.  He is the proud father of three children, Thomas, Christina, and Michael Phelps, VU’10.   


David A. Price ’84

After graduating in 1984, David A. Price spent 10 years in retail management with Marshall Field’s and May Department Stores. For the past 18 years he has been an entrepreneurial owner of RPS Imaging, which is the fifth largest radiology equipment sales and service distribution company in the United States. He has served on the board of directors for National Healthcare Distributors for the past 12 years. He has volunteered his time to coach youth baseball and basketball teams since 1997, and also serves as an assessor for the VU College of Business Assessment Center. Price received his B.S. degree in business administration with a management concentration from Valparaiso University in 1984.

As a serial entrepreneur, Daniel Quigg has a history of creating wealth for investors. He is currently the CEO of Hosted Technology Exchange, LLC, a telecommunications company specializing in managed services and Nine Iron Innovations, Inc., a startup company in the golf industry. From 2001-03, Mr. Quigg served as CEO of RIS Logic and took an emerging radiology software company from $250,000 in revenue to a $6 million run rate, ultimately selling to Merge Healthcare for approximately $16.75 million dollars. Dan received his B.S. from Valparaiso University in 1991 and in 1993 received his CPA certification. In May of 2007 he received his MBA from Case Western Reserve University Weatherhead School of Management. He’s served as an advisor on the Presidents Council for Opportunity International, the advisory council for Christian Business Owners Fellowship and on the development committee for India Gospel League. Married to wife Debbie for 23 years, they have three daughters. 


John T. Rudy ’81

John T. Rudy serves as senior vice president heading special accounts for the United States covering community banking, business banking and private bank groups. Formerly, as regional president for the Harris Community Banking Indiana Region, he was responsible for overseeing the integration of Mercantile Bank into Harris, as well as guiding business development strategy. Rudy joined Harris in 1981. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University and an M.B.A. from DePaul University. He is active in United Way through the bank and recently was appointed to the board of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois.

Dan Tiemann is the Americas Lead for Transactions & Restructuring for KPMG LLP. Mr. Tiemann has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, and has served as a financial consultant to numerous investors and lenders on more than 400 leveraged transactions.  Additionally, he has assisted numerous private equity investors in conducting due diligence and integrating target companies.

Patrick Wanta is based in Roseville, California and serves as a Senior Vice President for Wells Fargo & Co. and is the regional head of Commercial Real Estate for Northern California outside the Bay Area, a regional business unit that sources, structures, underwrites, and manages a portfolio of senior commercial mortgages and construction loans. Mr. Wanta received a BS from Valparaiso University. Patrick is involved in numerous civic and philanthropic activities including serving as an Advisory Board Member of the Child Advocates of Placer County.  Patrick also was a Governor Appointee to the Loan and Grant Committee for the Department of Housing and Community Development for the State of California.  Patrick is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but has been in California the last 35 years.

Jason Winkler is Senior Director of Investor Relations at Motorola Solutions, an industry leader with $8.7 billion in revenues delivering mission critical communication solutions to government and enterprise customers worldwide.  He also serves as Chief of Staff for Motorola's Chairman and CEO, responsible for staff operations and strategic activities associated with the CEO.  His prior experience includes numerous finance leadership roles supporting global channel management, sales, audit, mergers and acquisitions, and product operations.  He began his career in consulting working for Hewitt Associates and then Oracle Corporation as Principal Consultant, where he implemented financial planning systems.  Jason earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Valparaiso University and an MBA with concentration in finance from University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, both with honors distinction.  He is qualified as a Six Sigma Green Belt and achieved the Certified Internal Auditor designation.  He is a member of the Executives’ Club of Chicago and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
