The fifth annual Walter Wangerin Jr. Celebration of Excellence in Preaching Series will conclude April 23, 2017, with guest preacher Timo-Matti Haapiainen, Project Secretary at The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. The series is Core 5th hour-approved.

Rev. Haapiainen will preach and University Pastor Charlene M. Rachuy Cox will preside for the 10 a.m. Sunday morning service of Holy Communion at the Chapel. To qualify for Core 5th-hour approval, students must also attend a lunch-time discussion with Rev. Haapiainen in the Helge Center, following the worship service.

Haapiainen, a doctor of theology, was ordained in 2003 and has worked since ordained in two parishes in Helsinki (Oulunkyla and Kallio) and as a publishing editor in Kirjapaja publishing house. Since 2010 he has been working in National Church Council in several projects, for example in developing worship. Currently he is a project secretary working on the Reformation Anniversary. Haaipiainen has written songs and hymns that have been published in many collections. One composition is included in ELCF’s new hymnal supplement.

The Wangerin Preaching Series, sponsored by the Chapel of the Resurrection, Office of Church Relations, and Institute for Liturgical Studies, is intended to bring notable clergy to Valpo’s Chapel of the Resurrection.
