Pastor Cunningham Leaving Chapel

Aug. 12, 2010

Dear Colleagues and Students,

The Rev. Joseph Cunningham, who has helped serve the spiritual needs of
the Valparaiso University community since 1999, has informed me that he
is resigning from his position as University Pastor to pursue new
ministry opportunities. Rev. Cunningham’s resignation will take effect
following a period of leave that he has requested and received in order
to transition to a different area of ministry.

“I’ve enjoyed my tenure here as University Pastor and Dean of the
Chapel of the Resurrection. It is time, however, for a new challenge,”
Rev. Cunningham said. “As the University launches its new strategic
plan, the ministry of the chapel is also entering a new phase of
exciting possibilities. The ministry of the chapel will benefit from
fresh leadership and vision. Giving thanks to God for the years here at
Valparaiso University, I know that God will continue to richly bless her
and the vibrant ministry of the chapel including its fine and dedicated
staff. Memories and friendships made through the years are treasured and
will sustain me and my wife Sara through the years to come.”

Rev. Cunningham’s leave will begin immediately and his
responsibilities, including providing spiritual counseling to students
and other members of the campus community, will be assumed by a group of
chapel associates. These associates, many of whom are ordained, will
include Valpo faculty and other individuals who are experienced in
ministering to spiritual needs. The University is committed to ensuring
that students continue to receive excellent pastoral care that supports
their personal growth.

I am grateful to Rev. Cunningham for the many years of service he has
rendered to this community, and I know that countless faculty, staff,
and students have been spiritually enriched by his ministry in our
midst. All of us who have worked with him in campus ministry wish him
well, and we send him forth with our prayers and our gratitude.

Sincerely,

Mark R. Schwehn
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
