- Lenten vespers and art reception are Feb. 26
The Christopher Center and the Brauer Museum announce a reception at Valparaiso University honoring St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church’s gift of the 1912 wood carving of the Last Supper by Alois Lang (1872-1954) to the Brauer Museum of Art’s permanent collection. This reception will take place on Sunday, February 26 at 3:30 p.m. on the fourth floor of the Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources, where the wood carving is on permanent display in a beautiful custom display case. The year 2012 marks the one-hundredth birthday of the carving.
The reception will consist of parishioners from St. John, a number of Valparaiso University faculty and staff members that have been involved with the donation and presentation of the piece, a musical quartet of middle school and high school students to provide entertainment, and finally Dr. Gretchen Buggeln, an expert on church architecture and liturgical art who will say a few words on the historical and cultural significance of the carving. Light refreshments will be served.
After this reception, all who attend can walk over to the nearby Chapel of the Resurrection to enjoy the Lenten Vespers service at 5:00 p.m. Presented by the Bach Institute at Valparaiso University, the service features BWV106 "Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit." The concert is free and open to the public.
