A special memorial service celebrating the life of Chris Patterson, a sophomore who was killed in Afghanistan in January, is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at the Chapel of the Resurrection.
Chris was a music education major who took leave from his studies at the University this fall to serve in Afghanistan with his Indiana National Guard unit based out of Valparaiso. During his time on campus, Chris was involved in many University activities, including ROTC, VuVox, Phi Mu Alpha and the Chorale. All four groups will be involved in the memorial service.
In a message to the Valparaiso community, President Mark A. Heckler said, "Chris embodied the spirit of service and thoughtful leadership that best represents the students who attend Valparaiso University. He did not hesitate to answer the call of service to his country and gave his life to protect others. We deeply grieve the passing of Chris Patterson and pray that God brings strength, comfort and peace to his family and friends."
Both campus ministries and counseling services are available to students, faculty and staff by visiting or calling the Chapel (219.464.5093) or by calling the counseling center at 219.464.5002.
