Awards given for 2013 Easter Peeps Show

Awards were presented Friday, April 5, to all who entered the 2013 Easter Peeps Show, a contest in which dioramas told stories from the Bible with Peeps marshmallow treats playing all of the characters. It was the chapel's fourth annual contest. This year's entrants included not only Valparaiso University students and staff but also families from the Valparaiso community.

Judges were VU alumni Phil Potempa, Jacob Just, and Emily Royer. Mr. Potempa donated as a prize a Peeps themed gift basket, donated by Just Born Inc., plus an official Peeps Maker Machine, all of which went to the Grand Prize winner.

Here is the commentary from the judges on this year's entries. (Photos of all of the entries can be found on the Chapel's Facebook page.)

Honorable Mention:

Winner of "Best Interpretation"

(Judges named this entry "Jericho" by the Gabriel Family of Valparaiso.)

We were drawn to the texture of the ground, the great costuming and the clever use of golden golf tees for the trumpet. We were puzzled and intrigued by the material of the Angels on the Arc of the Covenant, but assumed they were made from the marshmallow insides of a Peep.

Honorable Mention:

Winner of "Most Personalized" and "Best Use of Out-of-Season Peeps"

"He Calls His Own Sheep By Name" by Office of Church Relations

We loved the identification of individual "Peeps" and the forethought and self-control required to abstain from Halloween Peeps and incorporate them for this exhibit.

Honorable Mention:

Winner of "The Jelly Bean Award"

"The Story of Pentecost" by Amanda Willy.

At first glance attracted by the transformation of a large white Peep into the dove of the Holy Spirit, the judges were soon impressed by the plentiful presence of jelly beans. As we continued to study the piece, we fell in love with the vibrant jelly orange "tongues of fire" above the twelve Peep heads, and the jelly jewel tones of the mosaic temple floor.

Honorable Mention:

Winner of "Best Use of Whatcha Got"

"Let my Peeps Go" by Brenda Brown

The rich variety of materials and candies really impressed us. Swedish fish, Ande's mints wrappers, and of course Peeps came together to make this dynamic entry shine. The Egyptians were dazzling and creatively put into a setting with the Pyramids behind them.

Honorable Mention:

Winner of the "Sense-sation Award"

"Hosanna" by Anna, John and Mary Fields

Early award ideas for this piece included "the most effective use of foliage" and the "what incredible palm branches award." However, as we found ourselves feeling the plants to see if they were real, smelling them, and surveying the mulch again and again, we realized (with our noses an inch from the Peep Jesus) perhaps we were only waiting for the cry of "Hosanna" to arise for our final sense to be triggered.

Best Overall / Peeps Maven:

Jesus washes His Peep-iples' Feet

by the Lutheran Deaconess Association

"How auto-biographically appropriate!" we thought, considering the LDA washes feet in the chapel on Maundy Thursday. The unique use of Peeps as bunny slippers (hence the title) as opposed starring them as Biblical characters caught our attention. This incredibly detailed interpretation includes bendystraws serving as knobbly-kneed legs, a bucket of water complete with splashes, and a Jesus who is actually bending down in preparation to wash, his Peep feet peeking out of the box.

The 2013 Peeps Show will remain on view through the weekend of April 12. Watch for information next year about how to enter the 2014 Peeps Show, planned for the first week after Easter.
