Dr. David Schmitt final preacher in Wangerin series

Rev. David Schmitt

The Walter Wangerin Jr. Celebration of Preaching Series for the 2013-14 school year concludes this Sunday, April 7, 2013 with the Rev. Dr. David R. Schmitt from Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, preaching at the Chapel. The service begins at 10 a.m. University Pastor James A. Wetzstein will preside at the service.

Dr. Schmitt is the Gregg H. Benidt Chair in Homiletics and Literature at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. He has been writing and teaching courses in the Department of Practical Theology there since 1995. Within the discipline of homiletics, he has analyzed the recent history of Lutheran preaching (with particular attention to the influence of Richard Caemmerer), has explored the Lutheran theology of preaching (with his paradigm of the tapestry of preaching), and has integrated insights from the New Homiletic into preaching (with particular attention to the use of narrative and imagery).

Dr. Schmitt is interested in the intersection of faith and the visual arts and is working on two book projects: Beholding the Sacred, a homiletics text that explores the use of images in preaching, and Restoration Spiritualities, a literary study that explores faith and literary culture in the later seventeenth-century.

He is the final speaker in the 2013-14 Walter Wangerin Jr. Celebration of Preaching Series, sponsored by the Chapel, the Center for Church Relations & the Institute for Liturgical Studies.
