Chapel 2014-15 Academic Year

Applications for student jobs for the 2014-15 Academic Year are now being accepted at the Chapel of the Resurrection through Friday, Feb. 28, 2014.

HEAD SACRISTAN:  The Head Sacristan has primary responsibility for liturgical space, appointments, vestments and paraments for all Sunday Morning celebrations of the Eucharist, and special worship events within the Chapel of the Resurrection.  Additionally, the Head Sacristan is responsible for coordination and oversight of the Eucharistic Chapel Staff.  Responsible to the University Pastor, the Head Sacristan must demonstrate knowledge, appreciation of, and experience with the Western Liturgical tradition.  Stipend: $1,200 for the academic year.  It is preferable that the Head Sacristan has served as Assistant Sacristan, prior to application.

ASSISTANT SACRISTAN:  The Assistant Sacristan, taking direction from the Head Sacristan, has direct responsibility for the needs of the physical worship environment -- liturgical space, appointments, vestments and paraments for all Sunday Morning celebrations of the Eucharist, and special worship events within the Chapel of the Resurrection.  Responsible to the Head Sacristan and University Pastor, the Assistant Sacristan must demonstrate an appreciation of the Western Liturgical tradition.  Stipend: $1,000 for the academic year.   Upon successful completion of service, the Assistant Sacristan will be eligible to apply for the position of Head Sacristan.

HEAD OF ALTAR CARE:  The Head of Altar Care has primary responsibility for the Eucharistic appointments -- vessels and elements -- for the regular Sunday celebrations of the Eucharist.  Additionally, the Head of Altar Care recruits, trains, schedules and oversees a team of volunteers to serve as the Altar Guild.  The Head of Altar Care arranges for altar care during Sundays amid the academic year when classes are not in session.  Responsible to the Head Sacristan and University Pastor, the Head of Altar Care must demonstrate an appreciation of the Western Liturgical tradition.  Stipend: $600 for the academic year.

HEAD USHER:  The Head Usher has primary responsibility for recruiting, scheduling, training and overseeing the volunteer usher team for the Chapel of the Resurrection.  Additionally, the Head Usher provides leadership in creating and sustaining a climate of hospitality at the Chapel of the Resurrection.  The Head Usher is expected to serve at all Sunday Morning Eucharist Celebrations when classes are in session, as well as other special worship events.  Responsible to the Head Sacristan and the University Pastor, the Head Usher must be a friendly, outgoing person with good communication skills.  This position may be held by one person or shared between two.  Stipend: $600 for the academic year.

HEAD ACOLYTE:  The Head Acolyte has primary responsibility for recruiting, scheduling, training and oversight of the team of acolytes for Sunday Morning Eucharist Celebrations.  The Head Acolyte organizes a full team of acolytes for all Sunday Morning Eucharist Celebrations, when classes are in session.  Responsible to the Head Sacristan and the University Pastor, the Head Acolyte must demonstrate an appreciation of the Western Liturgical tradition and knowledge of all worship leadership roles, including but not limited to, setting and clearing the Eucharistic Table.  Stipend: $500 for the academic year.

CHRISTIAN MINISTRY NETWORK COORDINATOR:  The Christian Ministry Network Coordinator regularly convenes student leaders from Religious Life and Campus Ministry clubs and organizations from across campus to mutually support and encourage each other in ministry and to create and carry out collaborative, ecumenical ministry events, experiences, and opportunities.  Responsible to the University Pastor, the CMN Coordinator must be actively involved in an on-campus ministry club or organization and demonstrate a commitment to ecumenical ministry relationships.   Stipend: $900 for the academic year.

CANDLELIGHT MISSION AND VISION COORDINATOR: The Candlelight Mission and Vision Coordinator overseas the Candlelight leadership team.  Primary responsibilities include: Scheduling and leading regular team meetings, including envisioning and evaluation conversations and strategies to focus on mission and vision; Collaborating with the University Pastor; Collaborating with the Candlelight Music Director and the Candlelight Art, Aesthetic, and Experience Director; Setting up for weekly Candlelight; Maintaining an open and collaborative relationship with the Chapel Sacristy Staff; Scheduling lectors; Maintaining a current contact list and calendar of all Candlelight leaders, including lectors, accompanists, cantors, and instrumentalists. Stipend: $1,000 for the academic year.

CANDLELIGHT MUSIC DIRECTOR(S):  The Candlelight Music Director(s) are responsible for all musical components of the Candlelight experience.  Primary responsibilities include:  Mastering the Candlelight music (Holden Evening Prayer); Accompanying Candlelight worship; Training cantors, as needed; Collaborating with Candlelight instrumentalists; Rehearsing with cantors and instrumentalists for 30 minutes prior to worship each week; Scheduling Candlelight Cantors and Instrumentalists; Participating in regular Candlelight Team meetings; Collaborating with the Candlelight Mission and Vision and Coordinator, the Candlelight Art, Aesthetic and Experience Director, and the University Pastor. Stipend: $1,200 for the academic year ($600/person if shared by two people).

CANDLELIGHT ART, AESTHETIC, AND EXPERIENCE DIRECTOR:  The Candlelight Art, Aesthetic and Experience Director is responsible for the Candlelight worship environment.  Primary responsibilities include: Imagining and envisioning ways in which the worship environment can best  enhance the worship experience; Utilizing art, space, props and other means to highlight the theme and experience of worship; Gather input from the worshiping community regarding ways to enhance the aesthetics of the worship experience; Participating in regular Candlelight Team meetings; Collaborating with the Candlelight Mission and Vision and Coordinator, the Candlelight Art, Musician(s), and the University Pastor. Stipend: $600 for the academic year 

CELEBRATE! HOUSE MANAGER: The Celebrate! House Manager takes the lead in providing hospitality for those who attend the weekly Celebrate! service on Wednesday nights. The House Manager works with the Celebrate! Music Coordinator and Art & Media Coordinator as well as the University Pastor to plan over-arching themes for each service and takes the lead in ensuring that the room is properly prepared for the worshipping community. At the service, the House Manager serves in the role of emcee, providing a continuity of student leadership, week after week. The House Manager is responsible to the University Pastor and should demonstrate an interest in liturgical theology as well as contemporary and experimental worship. Stipend: $700 for the academic year.

CELEBRATE! ART & MEDIA COORDINATOR:  The Celebrate! Art & Media Coordinator is responsible for the design and implementation of environmental art and media at the weekly Celebrate! service on Wednesday nights. The Art & Media Coordinator works with the Celebrate! Music Coordinator and the House Manager as well as the University Pastor to plan over-arching themes for each service. The Art & Media Coordinator designs the projections used at the service and works with the Music Coordinator to ensure that lyrics are accurately presented. Typically, the Art & Media Coordinator runs the projections at each service. The Art & Media Coordinator takes the lead in planning and presenting environmental art installations that support the nightly theme and/or provide a variety of means for those in worship to be engaged and engage the experience. The House Manager is responsible to the University Pastor and should demonstrate an interest in liturgical theology as well as contemporary and experimental worship and background in art or technology is helpful, though not required. Stipend: $800 for the academic year.

SOUND TECHNICIAN MANAGER: The Sound Technician Manager assists with Sound Technician recruitment, training, and job assignment scheduling. Typically, the Head Sound Technician will be scheduled into the regular sound technician rotation. Responsible to a University Pastor, the Head Sound Technician must be attentive to detail and able to work independently with little or no supervision, have timely attendance with the ability to vary schedule, present a professional, helpful, and amiable attitude, and communicate effectively. Additional requirements: A minimum of four completed semesters at Valparaiso University before start date, familiarity with Chapel facility, its services and programs; working experience as Chapel student staff and/or volunteer will be a plus. Hourly position, $8.00/hour, 2-10 hours per week, Monday – Sunday, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., shifts may vary.

SOUND TECHNICIANS: Each Sound Technician plays a vital role in support of worship services and special events at the Chapel by operating the sound system. Must be able to work at least one Morning Prayer service every week in addition to other services on a rotation basis. Must have a minimum of two completed semesters at Valparaiso University prior to start date. Responsible to Head Sound Technician, the Sound Technician must have timely attendance, prior experience with technology, willingness to learn, and the ability to apply knowledge and experience to new and challenging situations. Hourly position, $7.25/hour, averaging 2 to 4 hours/week. Hours and shifts may vary.

SUMMER SACRISTAN:  The Summer Sacristan has primary responsibility for liturgical space, appointments, vestments and paraments for all Sunday Morning celebrations of the Eucharist, and special worship events within the Chapel of the Resurrection during the summer months, when classes are not in session. The Summer Sacristan is also responsible for altar care for all Sunday Morning Eucharist Celebrations, including preparation of the all Eucharistic appointments (including, but not limited to the elements), and clean up following worship. Additionally, the Summer Sacristan will assist the Wedding Coordinator with set up and tear down.  Responsible to the University Pastor, the Summer Sacristan must demonstrate knowledge, appreciation of, and experience with the Western Liturgical tradition, while being timely and attentive to detail.  Hourly position, $7.25/hour, averaging 3 hours/week.  Hours and shifts may vary.

WEDDING COORDINATOR ASSISTANTS:  Each Wedding Coordinator Assistant has primary responsibility for assisting the Chapel Wedding Coordinator during chapel wedding rehearsals and services. The Wedding Coordinator Assistant operates the sound board, does room setup and teardown, and provides a climate of hospitality. Responsible to the Manager of Chapel Operations, the Wedding Coordinator Assistant must be professional, attentive to detail, have timely attendance with the ability to vary schedule, be able to relate to others and communicate effectively. The assistant should be familiar with the Chapel facility and sound system and have the previous experience as an assigned Chapel sound technician for at least three major University events. Stipend position: $50/wedding (rehearsal included), averaging 5-6 hours/wedding. Hours and shifts may vary.  

HOSPITALITY ATTENDANTS:  The Hospitality Attendant is the “first face” of the Chapel and plays a critical role in creating and sustaining a spirit of hospitality. Each hospitality attendant greets and offers assistance to all visitors to the building, provides guided tours for groups (scheduled in advance), and assists Chapel staff with a variety of office work. Must have excellent communication skills, ability to operate (or be trained in operating) office equipment to assist in the production of worship materials, ability to work independently with little or no supervision, and have timely attendance. The attendant should have intermediate knowledge of the Chapel historic structure and familiarity with Chapel services and programming and a minimum of two completed semesters at Valparaiso University before start date. Professional/business casual appearance is required while on duty. Responsible to the Manager of Chapel Operations. Hourly position, $7.25/hour, regular daytime weekly shifts Monday-Friday.

HOSPITALITY ATTENDANT MANAGER: The Hospitality Attendant Manager is responsible for managing the Hospitality Attendant staff and to ensure the day-to-day hospitality activities are delivered smoothly and all functions are carried out. This position also provides administrative support to the Chapel staff when required. Hourly position, $8.00/hour, 6-8 hours per week, Monday – Sunday, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., shifts vary.

BUILDING MANAGER: The Building Manager assists with Building Associates recruitment, training, and job assignment scheduling and assists with all room set-up and take-down related to worship and Chapel special events, and provides building and room daily inspection in the morning. Responsible to the Manager of Chapel Operations, the Building Manager must be attentive to detail and able to work independently with little or no supervision, have timely attendance with the ability to vary schedule, present a professional, helpful, and amiable attitude, and communicate effectively. Additional requirements: A minimum of four completed semesters at Valparaiso University before start date, familiarity with Chapel facility, its services and programs; working experience as Chapel student staff and/or volunteer will be a plus. Hourly position, $8.00/hour, 2-10 hours per week, Monday – Sunday, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., shifts may vary.

BUILDING ASSOCIATES:  Building Associates assist with room set-up and take-down related to worship and Chapel special events. Responsible to the Building Manager, the Building Associate must be attentive to detail and able to work independently with little or no supervision, have timely attendance with the ability to vary schedule, present a professional, helpful, and amiable attitude, and communicate effectively.  Hourly position, $7.25/hour, 1-2 hours per week, Monday – Sunday, shifts may vary.

PUBLICATIONS OFFICE ASSISTANT: The chapel publications office assistant provides support in the production of worship materials. Responsible to the Chapel Publications Coordinator, the assistant must be attentive to detail, have the ability to operate (or be trained in operating) a variety of office equipment, have timely attendance with the ability to vary schedule, present a professional, helpful, and amiable attitude, and communicate effectively.  Hourly position, $7.25/hour, 3-6 hours per week, Wednesday-Friday, shifts may vary. 

PHOTOGRAPHER: The Chapel Photographer works with chapel staff to photograph various aspects of chapel programming, as directed by the Publications Coordinator. The photographer is responsible for creating photographs that will be used to showcase the Chapel to different audiences, including prospective students, current students and the community. Must have the ability to photograph worship services and other events in a professional and non-intrusive manner and provide own photography equipment. Pay is per assignment. Hours vary.  

MORNING PRAYER STUDENT LEADERS:  Morning Prayer Student Leaders are fundamental to the smooth planning and leading of Morning Prayer.  They work with chapel staff and other students in developing skills in worship planning and leadership.  Four upper class students serve on the team that plans and leads daily Morning Prayer. Responsible to the University Pastor, Morning Prayer leaders write and lead worship services and help promote Morning Prayer attendance and student leadership. They help recruit leaders for roles of lector, leaders of prayer, and speakers.  Stipend position: $1,000/academic year.

MORNING PRAYER MUSIC COORDINATOR: The Morning Prayer Music Coordinator is fundamental to the smooth planning and leading of music in Morning Prayer.  The coordinator works with chapel staff and other students in planning and leading music for worship.  The music coordinator is a member of the Morning Prayer planning team, and assigns keyboardist, cantors, and instrumentalists for services.  The music coordinator assists with recruiting and training for Morning Prayer planning and coordinates all musicians serving at Morning Prayer. Reports to the Director of Chapel Music. Stipend position: $1,000 for the academic year.

KANTOREI LIBRARIAN:   This person assists the chapel staff by providing leadership in organizing music for the chapel choir.  The Kantorei Librarian assists in the worship of the chapel by providing support for the smooth rehearsals of the Kantorei.  Reporting to the Director of Chapel Music, the librarian is responsible for the music library of the Kantorei Choir. This includes taking and returning music from the music library, organizing choral anthems and choir folders, copying music as needed for the choir.  Stipend: $400 for the academic year.

WEDNESDAY MATINS ORGANIST: The Matins Organist assists worship in the chapel by providing weekly music leadership at Wednesday Morning Prayer.  This person supports the work of Morning Prayer by providing keyboard leadership each Wednesday morning.  The organist plays weekly for Wednesday Morning Matins service in the chapel.  The organist works with the Morning Prayer planners for hymn choices, and works with the Matins Choir, playing accompaniments as needed.  Reports to the Director of Chapel Music. 4 hours per week. Stipend:  $1,000 for the academic year.

MATINS CHOIR DIRECTOR(S): This person provides leadership to the Morning Prayer worship assembly by leading the choir weekly. The Matins Choir Director(s) support the work of Wednesday Morning Prayer by providing leadership for choir and congregational singing.  The Matins Choir Director(s) plan and select all psalm setting for use in Wednesday Matins services.  They recruit and publicize the choir and its rehearsals.  They prepare rehearsals, set up choir copies, accompaniments and instrumentalists’ parts.  They lead weekly rehearsals and Wednesday morning warm-up.  They direct the choir at Wednesday morning Matins services and report to the Director of Chapel Music. 4 hours per week. Stipend:  $1,000 for the academic year.

HANDBELL CHOIR DIRECTOR(S): The Handbell Choir Director(s) support the worship of the Chapel of the Resurrection through leadership at select services throughout the academic year.  The Handbell Choir Directors(s) plan and select all handbell music for the choir(s).  They recruit and publicize the choir and its rehearsals.  They prepare rehearsals, set up choir copies, and keep all equipment in good order.  They check equipment for repairs and service.  Working with the presidents and faculty advisor, they prepare for campus services (Advent/Christmas Vespers, Transfiguration Vespers, Palm/Passion Sunday) and off-campus events.  They prepare Sunday afternoon rehearsals and lead those rehearsals.  Reports to the Director of Chapel Music. 6-8  hours per week. Stipend: $1,200 for the academic year.
