Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove Coming to Campus

Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, author of Learning from our Enemies: The Peculiar Justice of the Peaceable Kingdom, will be on campus as the keynote speaker for the 2010 Peace and Social Justice Symposium, Saturday, Nov. 13, Ballroom, Harre Union. The keynote address, which is CORE 5th hour approved, is at 1:30 p.m. Wilson-Hartgrove is one of the authors included in On Our Way, the book which has been the focus for a series of speakers at Morning Prayer this school year.

The Peace and Social Justice Symposium offers opportunities to hear from a noted speaker and a variety of topically-driven break-out sessions over the course of two days, led by informed Valpo students and leaders in the local community. On Friday, Nov. 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. the symposium opens with a panel from the law school, “Law and the Community,” at the Union (Please note correction in location.)

On Saturday, free registration starts at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, and continues through the event.  Members of SALT (the Social Action Leadership Team of the Chapel), LIVE (Latinos in Valparaiso for Excellence), Alliance and LUX will present break-out sessions on human trafficking, immigration, interfaith relations, rape victims of war, campus and community service, poetry and monologue writing, and more.  The focus sessions are also CORE approved.

Valpo and other students can participate for free in the Low-on-the-Food-Chain Lunch by pre-registering; you must show an ID and are asked to bring a canned good for a local food pantry. Advance registration is required by Nov. 5th for everyone wishing to eat lunch. (Cost is $10 for all others.) Pre-register by downloading an application or pick up a copy at the Gandhi-King Center (Union) or at the Chapel.

Note: Unlike previous years, all events for the PSJS will take place in the Harre Union.
