The Chapel's Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) and the Union are seeking faculty or salaried employees willing to chaperone Valpo students during the first week of spring break on service trips for 2013.
SALT and the Union are working together this year to offer students the opportunity to spend a week on service trips, with options for six different locations across the country. Valpo students have traveled to New Orleans annually since Hurricane Katrina to help with the rebuilding of the city. This year, that work will continue, as well as opportunities to serve in other areas of the country -- New Jersey, Detroit, Minot ND, Pine Ridge SD, and Harvey IL.
Students may apply for the service trips through the Harre Union and are expected to pay a portion of the costs. Space is limited. To register, or for more information, download the application here and then contact Jessica Wilson at the Union (2nd floor, student organization suite), at 219.464-6710 or by email.
All trips will leave the university on March 2nd and return on March 9th and all -- except for Harvey IL trip -- will be traveling via seven-passenger van. Some trips may have an overnight stay in an additional city to break up the drive.
NOTE: All trips are filled as of 1/29/13 except for Harvey IL and Detroit.
The trips are:
Harvey IL: 15 students (by individual's car)
New Orleans: 24 students (by van) - FILLED
Travel to Camp Restore and work with several different projects throughout New Orleans. These projects help the citizens of New Orleans as they continue to rebuild and adapt to the changes and challenges of their city post Hurricane Katrina.
Learning Outcomes: Learn how even after seven years of work, New Orleans is still not fully recovered and what that means for New Orleans natives.
Cost: $215 + Some Meals
New Jersey: 6 students (by van) - FILLED
This trip will bring students to New Jersey where Hurricane Sandy recently caused severe damage to many communities. Students will aid in different rebuilding projects needed to get families in these communities back on their feet.
Learning Outcomes: Learn how natural disasters affect communities and how volunteers have helped families in these communities continue to rebuild.
Cost: $215 + Meals
If you have questions, please contact Jessica Wilson at the Union (2nd floor, student organization suite), at 219.464-6710 or by email.
