The Rev. Dr. Susan Briehl will preach Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Chapel of the Resurrection, as part of the Walter Wangerin, Jr. Celebration of Preaching Series. The series, which began Sept. 9, is intended to bring notable clergy to Valpo's Chapel. The service is at 10 a.m.
Susan Briehl is a pastor of the ELCA, rostered in the Indiana-Kentucky Synod and called to serve as the Associate Director of the Valparaiso Project on the Education and Formation of People of Faith. Previously she has served with her husband Martin Wells as Executive Director of Holden Village, as campus pastor at Pacific Lutheran University, and as pastor of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Bellingham, WA. She has taught preaching and parish worship at Wartburg Seminary.
Susan holds a B.A. and an M.A. in English from Washington State University, a Master of Divinity from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA, and a Doctor of Divinity (honoris causa) from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C. She has written numerous books, liturgical texts, hymns, and worship songs. Among her most recent publications are On Our Way: Christian Practices for Living a Whole Life, edited with Dorothy Bass (Upper Room, 2009), and Holden Prayer around the Cross: A Guide to the Liturgy, with Tom Witt (Augsburg 2009). She lives in Spokane, WA.
Other upcoming preachers in the series will be the Rev. Dr. John Arthur Nunes, president and CEO of Lutheran World Relief, on Dec. 2; the Rev. Dr. David Vasquez, campus pastor, Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, on Jan. 20; and the Rev. Dr. David R. Schmitt, Benidt Chair in Homiletics and Literature, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, on April 7.
