World Relief Campaign

Every year, for more than 30 years, the Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) of the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University selects one project for which to raise money. We call it the World Relief Campaign. This is in addition to numerous activities done locally which generate hundreds of volunteer hours by students and benefit the Valparaiso area. SALT is involved in local volunteering, spring break service trips and church-based community organizing.

The Social Action Leadership Team (SALT) is the Spirit-led social justice ministry of the Chapel of the Resurrection at Valparaiso University in which students from all walks of life come together in community to embody the Christian call to be the “salt of the earth” (Matt. 5:13). Every year, SALT selects one project for which to raise money, the World Relief Campaign.

Certainty is a feeling that people like. To know without a doubt is something that humans have strived for in all aspects of life, and the uncertain moments of life tend to present fear and anxiety.

This is especially true in regards to medical problems. Being uncertain about what illness or disease a person may have can be terrifying, as it prevents treatment from occurring. However, with appropriate diagnosis, certainty can be restored as treatment can then begin. The people of Bukasa, Uganda, currently experience uncertain diagnoses at Mercy Medical Center (MMC), as they lack the ability to analyze blood-borne illnesses and bacterial infections.

As a result, SALT is partnering with MMC, through the U.S.-based non-profit organization Children to Love, for the 32nd annual World Relief Campaign. With a goal of at least $30,000, the funds raised will be used to purchase blood and urine analyzers, bacteria incubators, a centigrade blood refrigerator, straining racks, and a water purification system, all to assist in the diagnosis of bacterial and infectious diseases that will otherwise be left untreated.

Please join SALT in providing certainty, or “okuzuula” in the local Lugandan language, to the people of Bukasa by joining The Okuzuula Project: Transforming Bukasa through Diagnosis.

The 2017 World Relief Campaign has been completed. Thank you for your support!
