Dr. Schoer received his B.A. from Luther College and Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from Texas A&M University. After completing a post-doctoral appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M he accepted a joint position teaching at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and doing research at the Ag-Based Industrial Lubricants (ABIL) research program at UNI. While at ABIL he helped develop and patent several lubricants that use biodegradable vegetable oils (especially soybean oils) as their primary component. Dr. Schoer joined the Department of Chemistry at Valparaiso University in 2003 where he teaches Quantitative Analysis, Advanced Instrumental Analysis, Elementary Physical Chemistry (focus on biophysical chemistry), Introduction to Forensic Science, and assists in the General Chemistry laboratories. He is a member of the Governor-appointed Clean Manufacturing Technology Board for the State of Indiana.
In addition to research studying interfacial phenomena at the nanometer scale, Dr. Schoer has been actively engaged with undergraduate students since the summer of 2005 on a project to monitor and improve the water quality in the Valparaiso Chain of Lakes watershed and other watersheds in NW Indiana. During the summer of 2007 this project expanded to include collaborative research with Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. This project was designed specifically to examine similarities and differences in water quality and water management issues facing east central China and northwest Indiana. The purpose of the project is to promote the exchange of ideas and resources to help both regions improve water quality and water management. During the summer of 2008 an additional collaborative project looking at improving water quality will be initiated with Zhejiang Forestry University in the Linan area of Zhejiang province.
