Associate Professor of Humanities and Political Philosophy
PhD, University of Wisconsin
Mr Murphy received his BA from the University of North Carolina,
and his MA and PhD in political science from the University of Wisconsin.
Prior to joining the Christ College faculty, he taught at Villanova
University and the University of Chicago. His published work includes
Conscience and Community: Revisiting Toleration and Religious
Dissent in Early Modern England and America (2001); The
Political Writings of William Penn (2002, editor); and
Religion, Politics, and the American Identity: New Directions,
New Controversies (2006, co-editor). His America
the Damned: Moral Decline, Divine Punishment, and the Jeremiad from
New England to 9-11 is forthcoming. Current work includes
an essay on religious violence in early America, a study of William
Penn, and essays on the relationship between the concepts of modernity
and enlightenment.
