CC 300 B - COMEDY ON STAGE

3 Credits
MWF 2:00-2:50 - Professor Paul

Stage Comedy in its various forms, (including situation comedy stand-up and improvisation), dates back thousands of years with our first records coming from the fifth-century BCE Athenians. In this seminar we will examine several examples of classic stage comedy, in dramatic form, from the Greeks and Romans, through the Renaissance and Elizabethans, Shakespeare in particular, and into the Modern and contemporary periods. We will also read some classic philosophical works on comedy and humor. We will take one field trip to see live theatre in Chicago. Assignments will include three essays distributed throughout the semester and a major contribution to a collection of stage comedy studies, which may be a longer seminar paper or a documented creative project.
