This course examines some of the environmental challenges we face today and their relationship to issues of social and economic justice, and it explores a variety of Christian responses to these challenges. The course pays particular attention to biblical sources and themes that inform theological perspectives on environmental responsibility, and it explores the work of selected contemporary Christian theologians and writers who are attempting to articulate a sound environmental ethic for today. Required reading includes selected biblical texts; the writings of selected essayists, such as Wendell Berry, who have addressed the role of environmental responsibility in Christian faith and life; and the work of contemporary Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant theologians, including liberation and feminist theologians. Requirements include active participation in class discussion; two short papers (5 pages each); and one research paper on a subject of the student’s choice (10 pages).
