Kathryn (Wernicke) Baerwald graduated from Valparaiso University in 1972 with a B.A. in history and German. She earned her J.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1975 and an L.L.M.from Georgetown University in 2007. She served from 1997-2010 as deputy general counsel and Medical Center counsel at Georgetown University, where she also taught as an adjunct professor in the Government Department. She was previously vice president and general counsel of the United Way of Alexandria, Va. She has been active in numerous Lutheran organizations, serving as general secretary of the American Lutheran Church, and on the boards of the Lutheran Community Foundation and Gettysburg Seminary.
