Junior Wins Prize for East Asia Research

Lauren PrusinskiChrist College and College of Arts and Sciences junior Lauren Prusinski (Muncie, Ind.) who majors in bio chemistry and Chinese and Japanese studies, has won the 2011 Mikiso Hane Prize for best undergraduate paper on East Asia. Lauren will present her paper at the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs at Macalester College in Minneapolis, October 29-30, 2011, where she will be awarded a cash prize and travel support. The MCAA is the Midwest region's branch of the Association of Asian Studies. Prusinski’s essay will be eligible for publication the Wittenberg (University) East Asian Studies Journal, a premier journal of undergraduate scholarship. Her paper, “Wabi-Sabi, Mono no Aware, and Ma: Tracing Traditional Japanese Aesthetics through Japanese History” is her Christ College honors thesis, written under the direction of Professor Jennifer Prough, Christ College. Prusinski developed her research project in Prough’s seminar Urban Japan: Past and Present, which included 10 days of field research in Kyoto, Japan, in spring 2011.
