The Chinese and Japanese Studies Program and the Confucius Institute at Valparaiso University(CIVU)will sponsor an intensive evening conversational Chinese class starting from the week of March 24. The class is designed to help people with little or no prior exposure to Chinese language to learn the basics in conversational Chinese so that they use it when traveling to China this year and/or are in a position to further study the language on their own.
What: The evening class, which is not for credit, will offer two sections. Section A will meet on Mondays and Wednesday from 8:00 to 9:45 PM. Section B will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00-9:45 PM. Friday afternoon and evening are reserved for one-on-one tutoring sessions (about 45 minutes) with a native Chinese speaker for 45 minutes.
When and where: All classes will meet in Room 142 of Meier Hall. The spring 2008 evening Chinese class will start from the week of April 28 and end on the week of March 24 for a total of six weeks and at least 12 contact hours (or more if one chose to participate in the tutoring sessions).
Who can register? Both VU and non-VU personnel can register for the class on a first-come, first-serve basis (each section of the class is limited to 15 participants). The class, however, is particularly suitable for anyone who plans to visit China in the near future, to work with projects related to China, or to want to start Chinese lessons but cannot take them full time as of yet.
Cost: The tuition for taking the class is $50 for VU student, faculty, and staff and $100 for non-VU personnel. Members of the CIVU will receive a 30% discount of the tuition (for information on how to become a member of CIVU, please contact its director, Professor Jianyun Meng (Jianyun.meng@valpo.edu). The tuition includes lectures, tutoring sessions, and course materials. Payment must be made before or on the first day of classes.
Text: The classes will use a set of materials developed especially for them and will be distributed in classes. In addition, they will use online sources for practice purposes.
Instructors: Professor Zhimin Lin and two Chinese graduate students will teach for the class. They will be joined late by two Chinese professors expected to arrive in early April who will also serve as staff teachers for the CIVU.
