Application for
The 2008 Summer Courses in China Program
VU's China Center is pleased to announce that
it will offer two summer courses and four internship programs
in China in summer 2008. The two courses are open to all majors.
The internship programs are open to education/business/communication/CJS/ICP
majors only (other majors need special approval). Students who
are interested in the program should complete and return the pre-registration
application form to Prof. Paul Trapp (Urschel Hall 212, x5036,
Paul.trapp@valpo.edu). The enrollment is limited to 20 or when
the quota is filled. The deadline to apply is 12/1/2007. So apply
right away!
Resident Directors: Prof. Westrick (Education) and Prof. Trapp
(CBA) will serve as the co-resident directors for the 2008 summer
program and offer the following Courses:
- ED490/CC300/EAST39/COMM490/SOC390/SOCW391, Current Problems
in Education: Dimensions of Culture, the Theoretical Frameworks
and Practice of Intercultural Effectiveness, Cr. 3 (Prof. Jan
Westrick, Chair of Department of Education). May fulfill the diversity
component of the general education requirement.
- MGT390/EAST390//ICP690/POLS490/ECON290, Globalization:
Challenges and Promises, Cr. 3 (Prof. Paul Trapp Business Administration).
May fulfill the global diversity component of the general education
requirement. Count as an upper division business elective. Business
majors must have junior standing or above.

The four internship programs (all internships are located in
Hangzhou city) are:
- COMM 386, Supervised Internship, Cr. 3.
- MGT 395/397/398, Internship in Business Administration
I, II & III, Cr. 0.5-2*
- ICP686, ICP internship, Cr.3. Priority given to ICP/JD
candidates
- ED490 (Education majors do internship by intensifying
ED490 for 1-2 credits)
Itinerary: Participants leave for Shanghai, China,
on May 19 or 20, 2007, and return from Beijing to Chicago on June
24 or 25, 2007. The program starts with a two-day tour of Shanghai
before arriving at Hangzhou, the provincial capital of Zhejiang,
where all the classes/internships will be held. There will be
four full weeks of classes with several group field trips. The
program ends with a three-day visit to Beijing, the capital of
China, before returning to US.
Cost: All participants will be responsible for
regular VU summer tuition (based on the number of the credit hours
taken (minimal 2 credits), international travel (about $1,200),
meals (about $200-$350), a $300 study center fee to cover visa
application and other fees, and $150 fees for students doing internship.
The China Center will pay for the two-day trip to Shanghai, three-day
trip to Beijing, and lodging in Hangzhou (Xizi Hotel for 4 weeks).
Enrollment: The enrollment is limited to 20 and
on a first-come, first served basis. So apply now!
Application/Registration: To participate in the
program, students must first complete a pre-registration form
and with the approval from their academic advisor. The form can
be downloaded here.
Prof. Trapp will start interviewing interested applicants in late
October. The deadline to apply is December 1, 2007 but the enrollment
will end once the maximum capacity is filled. ICP students will
need to receive approval from the Dean of the Graduate Division.
There will be several pre-departure orientation sessions in spring
when the formal registration will also be completed.

* Open to business majors with junior standing. MGT395 must be
taken along with at least one of the regular courses. MGT397/398
