Brent Whitefield

Brent Whitefield, Assistant Professor of History

After receiving a BA in history from Amherst College, and an MA from Regent College (Vancouver) in Christian Studies (church history), he received his Ph.D. from Cambridge University in the field of Church History in Asia. His thesis was entitled "The Christian Literature Society for China: The Role of its Publications, Personalities, and Theology in late-Qing reform movements." It focuses on the activities of a missionary-led publishing effort in Shanghai and encompasses such disciplines as missiology, intellectual history, and Sinology. Dr. Whitefield's primary interest and expertise, however, are in the fields of modern Chinese history and the history of East-West Contact. Dr. Whitefield has taught at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Keio University, Lubango (Angola) and Kumamoto Kaiichi Technical High School. At Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge University, and at Amherst College he received scholarships and fellowships.
