MACS News
- Professor Lin, Director of the MACS program, will be in China during
VU's Spring Break in March to finalize details for the 2006 Summer
Intensive Immersion Program. More information on the summer program
will be available following Spring Break!
- Application deadline is April 15, 2006 for participation in the Summer
2006 program and Fall '06 enrollment!
- Scholarships, teaching & research assistantships will be awarded on a
priority basis - so get applications in early in order to be
considered!

What can you do with a MACS degree?
Some opportunities include:
- Business, Finance & Marketing: accountant, human resources director,
economist, stock broker, import/export agent, financial adviser,
marketing specialist
- Education: elementary, secondary and college-level teaching in the US &
other countries, library science, school administrator
- Social Services: social worker, probation officer, criminology, school
counselor, government social worker
- Communication: translator, interpreter, journalist, publisher, reporter,
public relations agent, advertising agent, editor, writer
- Government: translator, interpreter, foreign service officer, customs
official, legal adviser, law enforcement
- Science & Technology: engineer, chemist, physicist, anthropologist,
biologist, researcher, computer programmer or systems specialist
Fall 2006 Course Schedule for MACS
- 6 credits in fourth-year Chinese language: CHST 607 and 608 (MWF 9:05
to 9:45 and TR 9:45 to 11:00)
- 3 credits of Readings in Chinese Literature: CHST 551 (TR 2:50 to
4:05)
- 3 credits of Public Policy in China: CHST 590A (MW 3:05 to 4:20)
- 1/2 credit of Graduate Seminar and HSK Test Preparation: CHST 696
(Tues. 11:30 to 12:30, lunch and seminar)
- 3 credits of graduate coursework - Refer to the Registrar's website

Scholarships, Assistantships, & Grants
- Three Starr Scholarships: up to $2,500/year are available for each year,
based on need & merit.
- Three Teaching Assistantships: up to $2,500/year are offered each year.
Recipients will assist with various assignments including tutoring
students enrolled in lower level of Chinese classes; normal workload is
15 hours per week.
- Three Research Assistantships: up to $2,500/year are offered each year.
Recipients will work with individual VU faculty members on a variety of
assignments; normal workload is 15 hours per week.
- Two Office Manager positions are available through the Chinese and
Japanese Studies Program each semester. Office managers are paid based
on student hourly wages; normal work load is about 20 hours per
week.

Application Process
- Applicants must meet the admission requirements of the Graduate School,
including a GPA of 3.0, certified transcripts of a bachelor's degree,
two letters of reference (at least one from an academic advisor or
faculty), and the application fee ($30).
- You can submit the application fee either online with a credit card or
via US mail with a check or cash. The transcripts and recommendation
letters may also be sent via US mail to the Office of Graduate
Studies.
