MACS Program News
- Mr. Robert Davis, Director of Chicago's Chinese Connection
Program, will be visiting Valparaiso University on Monday, Dec. 4, 2006,
and conducting a workshop focusing on matters related to adding a
Chinese language and culture component to a school curricula including
staff, teaching materials, resources, among others. Teachers and
administrators from IN and IL will be in attendance.
- Applications are now being accepted for the 2007-2008 academic year for
the MACS program. Apply early for scholarship and assistantship

Spring 2007 Schedule Online!
Students can also take three credits of graduate course selected from any of
the graduate-level courses offered in the fall that fits their personal
interest or background. For a list of such courses available in Spring 2007 at

Reminders for all MACS students:
- If you haven't already done so, meet with Professor Zhimin Lin to
determine your Spring 2007 schedule for registration.
- If you know of a qualified individual(s) who may benefit from the MACS
program, be sure to tell Jamie Haney their name and contact information
so that we may send them information.
Proposed Confucius Institute
- Valparaiso University has submitted a proposal to establish a Confucius
Institute on campus with the help of Jie Song (graduate student),
Professor Zhimin Lin and Dean David Rowland.
- If approved, the Institute would allow VU to become a leading resource
in Northwest Indiana for Chinese language and culture studies!
2007 Summer Immersion Program grant application submitted!
- For the second year in a row, Valparaiso University has submitted an
application to the Fulbright Hays Group Projects Abroad for grant
funding to assist with the Summer Immersion Program ("SIP").
- If VU receives the grant, the 2007 Summer Immersion Program will be able
to take K-12 teachers, administrators, and undergraduate and graduate
students interested in education and China for an intensive workshop on
Chinese language and culture.
- In April, 2007, VU will be notified of the application committee's
decision.
- Any education majors or students studying Chinese who are interested in
attending the 2007 SIP should contact Jamie Haney at

Indiana Taking Steps to Implement Chinese Language and
Culture into K-12 Schools
- Indiana is taking initiative to add Chinese language and culture
instruction into the K-12 curriculum. Beginning in March, 2007, all
Indiana schools will begin adding Chinese language to their class
offerings.
- Thus far, five elementary schools, two middle schools and eight high
schools offer Chinese.
- Five Indiana universities also offer at least two years of Chinese to
their students.
