In cooperation with a number of local organizations, we have sponsored and will continue to sponsor music trips to China by music groups in the US and Canada and summer music camps for international and regional students and musicians.

1) 2007 Windiana Concert Band music tour to China

From June 13-25th, the Windiana Concert Band will perform six concerts in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Shuyang, and Liangyungang and have the opportunity to tour the historic cites of Suzhou and Xi'an, the Grand Port of Orient, in addition to Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing, and they will have the chance to visit the magnificent Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an!

The tour will be led by:
Dr. Jeff Doebler, Director and conductor
Prof. Jianyun Meng, coordinator and guide

Fee for the tour is $2,000.00 per person for all players and $2,500 for non-performers. The fee covers international and domestic airfares, accommodations in China in three- and four-star hotels (double occupancy), three meals per day, ground transportation, admissions to all attractions, travel insurance, and the visa application fees. Participants will be responsible for insurance for music instruments, passport expenses, trips to and from O'Hare International Airport, and incidental expenses.

Applications are being accepted now and will end when the enrollment limit (60) is met. 6/17 Sunday: Morning bus to Hangzhou, check in hotel, Late afternoon Concert #3 on the Lakefront
6/18 Monday: Morning sightseeing and shopping in Hangzhou, Concert #4 in Hangzhou
6/19 Tuesday: Morning bus to Shuyang
6/20 Wednesday: Concert #5 in Shuyang
6/21 Thursday: Morning bus to Lianyungang or Qingdao check in hotel, Concert #6 in Lianyungang or Qingdao
6/22 Friday: Morning flight to Xi'an
6/23 Saturday: Sightseeing in Xi'an
6/24 Sunday: Morning flight to Beijing
6/25 Monday: Departure for Chicago, arrival at O'Hare in the afternoon of the same day

3) Announcement: The 2006 International Music Camp

What is it about?

This unique festival brings together serious music students from around the world for intensive musical training and performance, development of cross-cultural friendships, and a chance to explore the great cities of America. Participants will rehearse and perform under conductors experienced with both professional and student musicians, and will receive coaching from Chicago area professionals. Participants will also have the unique opportunity to live and work with fellow musicians from different countries and cultures.

Who's invited?

Students from America and Asia, ages 13-20, who have played woodwind, brass, percussion, or string instruments for at least three years. Teachers of these students are also encouraged to attend, with special seminars for these and other educators.

The curriculum

Students will rehearse each day as part of a concert band, string orchestra, or symphony orchestra. Daily sectionals will also be held to work on rudimentary issues. Camp will conclude with a gala concert.

Pre-camp Language Programs for International Participants

For international participants, there will be a three-day pre-camp Intensive English Language Program that starts on July 20 and ends on July 23. The English Program is designed to enhance verbal communication skills with a focus on music terminology and rehearsal terms and provides daily (8:00 AM to 3:00 PM) small classes and individualized tutoring sessions. Recreational activities are scheduled every afternoon (after 3:00).

Great US Cities Tour

Immediately after the music camp, international and interested US participants will go on a seven-day sightseeing trip to both the East and West coasts of the US. From July 28 to 30, they will visit Washington DC and New York. From July 31 to August 3, they will visit the San Francisco and Los Angeles area before returning to home countries.

Costs

For US participants, the cost for the Valparaiso University International Music Festival is $500.00 per person. For non-resident participants, the cost is $300.00. There will be a $50.00 non-refundable deposit due by the application deadline (June 30, 2006). The deposit will apply towards the fee for the Music Camp. US participants may join the Great US Cities Tour for an additional $1,200.00, which includes all the expenses for the tour and an additional round trip ticket between Chicago and the East coast. US participants must also present copy of medical insurance upon registration.

For international participants, the total cost for all three programs (pre-camp Intensive English Language Program, Valparaiso University International Music Festival, and Great US Cities Tour) is US$2,800.000 per person. There will be a non-refundable $200.00 deposit due by May 1, 2006. The total cost includes international travel from home country to and from Chicago, travel within the US, tuition, room and board, and insurance. The price does NOT cover visa application fees and other related costs.

For international participants who will only participate in the first two programs (the precamp Intensive English Language Program and Valparaiso University International Music Festival), the total cost is US$2,200.00.
