Starting from fall 2002, VU offers, with the help of a very generous grant from the Freeman Foundation, a new scholarship (Valparaiso University Chinese and Japanese Studies Scholarship) to incoming students. A total of 6 such scholarships will be offered each year. Each scholarship carries a maximum amount of 5,000.00 dollars on top of the scholarship/grants/loans a qualified student receives from VU. The scholarship is renewable for four years.

VU is a leader in East Asian studies among schools of its size. In addition to its strong academic and overseas studies program in both China and Japan, VU has recently established Valparaiso University China Center in Hangzhou. The VU China Center will offer summer sessions in Hangzhou for VU students; research and internship grants to students engaged in China-related studies, a one-year program on Chinese urban culture and literature which features one-on-one tutoring by established China specialists or Chinese authors/writers. Students who receive the new Chinese and Japanese Scholarship will be automatically eligible for considerations for any of these new opportunities.
