Letter to Applicants

Dear Student:

As the economic power of China and other Asian nations continues to grow rapidly, college graduates who have studied Asian languages and culture find themselves increasingly more marketable. You may not have indicated an interest in Chinese and Japanese areas, but we want you to know that many students with an interest in International Service enter Valparaiso University's Asian program. By choosing Chinese and Japanese Studies as your first or second (complementary) major at Valpo, you will not only develop exceptional knowledge and experience in Asian studies, but may also be eligible to apply for a scholarship of up to $20,000 ($5,000 per year). Recipients of the scholarship will be considered for a number of others opportunities too, including:

  • The annual Summer Courses in China Program
  • Multiple research and internship grants for China-related projects
  • Travel grants to attend professional conferences
  • An annual research seminar that includes two weeks of field research in China or Japan during spring break
  • One-on-one weekly tutoring sessions with native speakers of Chinese/Japanese

The enclosed brochure provides an overall view of the many aspects of our Chinese and Japanese Studies Program. You will learn about our study-abroad programs in China and Japan, students' experiences at Valpo, and much more. Please take a few minutes to read the brochure carefully and consider how you might take advantage of the extensive on- and off-campus Asian opportunities at Valpo

If you have not yet applied for admission to Valpo, complete the admission application at www.valpo.edu/admissions/apply and then complete and submit the enclosed Chinese and Japanese Studies scholarship application to the address listed on the application. The deadline for application is February 1, 2008.

I look forward to discussing the study of Asia with you and encourage you to apply to Valpo by January 15, 2008 to become eligible for priority scholarship consideration. Even better, we invite you visit Valpo and us at a time convenient to you. Please don't hesitate to contact me at 219.464.5749 or zhimin.lin@valpo.edu. You may also log-on to www.valpo.edu/cjsp for more information.
