The Chinese and Japanese Studies Program (CJSP) is pleased to announce that it will co-sponsor with Christ College a research seminar in spring 2007. This seminar will focus on the ways that culture and history are remembered in contemporary Japan. In order to target our discussions, we will focus on four main sites of cultural memory: the samurai spirit, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, imaginings of the family, and Kyoto as living history. Select readings from literature, history, and anthropology will guide us through the issues inherent in public memory and we will tack back and forth between historical accounts and contemporary incarnations. In addition to regular classes, this seminar features a subsidized, 10 day field research trip to Japan during spring break. The seminar requires each participant to conduct a scholarly research project and complete a 25 page research paper based in part on the field trip. Professor Prough of Christ College, a specialist in contemporary Japanese Culture, will teach this course and lead the field research. Cutural Memory in Japan will be cross-listed as EA390/CC325.

Prerequisites: This research seminar is open to all majors. However, to register for the course, a student must: 1) have completed or audited at least one course on East Asia (e. g., HIST 240) prior to spring 2007; 2) receive recommendation from his/her academic advisor; and, 3) receive approval from Professor Prough.

Cost: The Chinese and Japanese Studies Program will cover most of the costs of field research trips including international travel, meals/lodging in Kyoto, Japan, and other research-related expenses. There is a $600.00 fee per student to cover the rest.

Language Training: While there is no formal language requirement, participants in this research seminar are strongly recommended to take or audit the Japanese language classes offered in the fall and spring.

Who Should Apply: This seminar provides an excellent opportunity for upper-level VU students who are interested in cross-cultural analysis, hands-on research experience, and/or exploring the relevance of his/her field of study in the context Japan.

Enrollment: Enrollment will be limited to 8.

Registration: Due to the need for advanced planning, pre-registration consultation with Professor Prough is required. Please submit the following application to Professor Prough (Mueller 120) by Friday October 19th (at the latest) so that decisions can be made before registration begins on October 29, 2007. If you are interested in this course or want to know more about the seminar, please contact Professior Prough (x5492, jennifer.prough@valpo.edu).

Every year VU Students under our faculty conduct take trips to China and Japan during spring break to conduct research on various aspects of Asian life. Typically trips go to China every two years and Japan every third year. Due to the scholarly nature of these classes, interested students must first submit an application.

Students interested in traveling abroad for exciting research opportunities should apply for the class while preparing their schedule for spring semester. Application information will be posted here when Professor Lin is prepared to collect applications. Please contact Professor Lin by e mail at zhimin.lin@valpo.edu, or by phone at (219) 464-5749 if you have questions.
